Wastewater treatment

Through advanced treatment processes, we transform wastewater into a valuable resource suitable for alternative applications—such as irrigating green spaces, golf courses and agricultural land—thereby reducing pressure on natural resources.

Wastewater treatment involves removing contaminants from wastewater before returning it to the natural environment. This process takes place at wastewater treatment facilities, where physical, chemical and biological processes are applied to reduce the pollutant load and minimise environmental impact.

At our wastewater treatment plants, we manage this process through progressive stages, combining physical, biological and chemical treatments:

Pre-treatment: Screens, sieves and grit traps remove large solid waste—including wipes, plastics, grit and grease—safeguarding all subsequent stages of the facility.
Primary treatment: Removal of suspended solids via physical processes like sedimentation, where heavier particles sink to the bottom.
Secondary (biological) treatment: Removal of dissolved organic matter thanks to microorganisms that break down impurities naturally.
Tertiary treatment (reclamation): Advanced processes, including filtration and disinfection, that enable water to be recycled for various applications, such as irrigation, urban cleaning and other sustainable applications.
Sludge line: Treatment of the sludge generated during the process, which is thickened, stabilised and dewatered for sustainable disposal or recycling into renewable energy.

This suite of processes enables us to return water to the environment safely or adapt it for reuse, contributing to water sustainability across the Western Costa del Sol. We operate seven wastewater treatment works along the Western Costa del Sol:
