Energy efficiency

We continue to move towards a management model based on environmental sustainability, energy efficiency and the continuous improvement of its infrastructure. Our commitment is clear: guarantee the supply and sanitation of water with the least possible impact, contributing to the fight against climate change and the sustainable development of the territory.

Energy efficiency is one of Acosol’s strategic pillars. Through an ambitious investment program of nearly €20 million, the company has promoted projects that enable energy savings and prevent the emission of large quantities of CO₂ into the atmosphere.

Major initiatives include:

  • Deployment of photovoltaic systems in wastewater treatment plants
  • Cogeneration and biogas utilization systems
  • Process optimization in treatment plants
  • Improvement of aeration and automation systems

These measures not only reduce energy consumption, but also strengthen the economic sustainability of this public service.

Energy efficiency strategy

Energy efficiency is a key priority in our planning, driven by a series of actions that have significantly transformed the organization’s operating model. In recent years, we have developed an investment program focused on optimizing energy consumption in key facilities of the water system, including wastewater treatment plants, pumping stations, distribution networks, and desalination plants.

The main lines of action include:

  • Replacement of electromechanical equipment with high-efficiency systems
  • Optimization of aeration processes in wastewater treatment plants
  • Integration of advanced control and automation frameworks
  • Enhancing energy performance in strategic infrastructure

These measures have significantly reduced overall energy consumption and improved operational efficiency

Optimizing Energy Performance in Strategic Infrastructure

One of Acosol’s main strategic focuses is enhancing energy efficiency across key facilities in the water supply network, with a particular emphasis on upgrades at the Marbella Seawater Desalination Plant (EDAM)

In this regard, the entity has promoted a comprehensive energy improvement project. With a final awarded investment of €7.6 million—down from an initial tender budget of nearly €10 million—the project is aimed at optimizing the plant’s energy consumption.

This action will reduce energy consumption to target levels of around 1.40 kWh/m³, by modernizing pumping systems, installing frequency converters, reconfiguring high-pressure lines, and upgrading electrical and control systems.

With an estimated execution period of 22 months, the project is part of Acosol’s overall energy efficiency strategy and is partially funded by the Andalusian Energy Agency.
